We pick for character, and nothing else gets a vote. Nobody pays to appear here and nothing on this site is sponsored. Every entry clears the same three things. One specific reason to go, writing that tells you what it's actually like to stand there, and a named source for where the research started.

What earns a spot
One specific reason to go
Not a category, not a star rating. One concrete thing you'd tell a friend about. A converted firehouse with a rooftop. A sealed passage under Central Park. If the reason takes a paragraph to explain, it usually isn't one.
Character over polish
Old, odd and characterful beats new and immaculate. We'd rather send you somewhere with a strange history and worn edges than somewhere that photographs cleanly and leaves nothing behind.
Enough to build a weekend around
We ask whether you'd plan two days near it. Some clear that bar alone. Others earn their place as the detour that justifies the extra night. We file them accordingly instead of inflating one into the other.
It survives the friend test
Would we send someone we like here, knowing they'd blame us if it disappointed? That question kills more entries than anything else.

It only photographs well
If the write-up dies the moment we stop describing the light, there was never anything underneath it.
It's interchangeable
If you could swap the name for any of fifty others and nobody would notice, we pass. Pleasant isn't the same as worth the drive.

An automatic no, and the shortest conversation we have.
Once it's in
The standards every write-up clears
Picking the place is half of it. The other half is not wasting your time once you're reading.
Nothing gets lifted
No run of eight words or more from any source we read survives into a place write-up. That's a hard check rather than a guideline. Entries that fail it go back, not out.
Numbers have to come from somewhere
Any figure that isn't in the underlying research gets flagged and pulled before it can publish. Dates, distances, prices, capacities. If we can't trace it, it doesn't run.
We say where we started
Every place page credits the source its research began with, by name and with a link. The write-up is ours. The starting point isn't always, and we'd rather tell you than let you assume.
Every entry answers the obvious questions
The things you'd actually ask before going, like access, timing and what to expect, are answered on every place and stay, not just the ones with room left over.
Where we stand
How we stay independent
No place buys its way onto this site. There are no sponsored listings, no paid placement and no arrangement where a hotel or an attraction gets a say in what we write about it. When we recommend somewhere, that's the whole reason it's here.
Booking is a separate thing from editorial, and we keep it that way. Wicked Cool Places provides the curation, the editorial and the search experience. All bookings, payments, cancellations and customer support are handled by Nuitee Travel Limited, our booking technology partner. When you book through us, your reservation is between you and Nuitee. Which stays we write about is decided before any of that comes into it.
Here is how we make money, because you should know it before you read a recommendation. When you book a stay through this site, Nuitee pays us a commission. That is the model. There is no advertising, no sponsorship and no other arrangement behind it.
It doesn't decide what gets written about. The arrangement is the same on every stay we can book, so there is nothing to gain by steering you towards one over another. And the place guides, which are most of this site, aren't bookable at all. They earn us nothing and they get exactly the same scrutiny.

Does anyone pay to appear on Wicked Cool Places?
No. Nothing here is sponsored, nobody buys a listing, and no place has ever been added because it asked. If it's on the site, an editor wanted it there.
What actually disqualifies a place?
Being interchangeable, mostly. Somewhere that photographs well but reads empty doesn't make it. Neither does anywhere that offers to pay for the spot.
Where does the research come from?
Public sources, then our own write-up. Every place page names where its research started and links to it. Nothing longer than a seven-word phrase carries over from anything we read.
Do you make money when I book?
Yes. Nuitee pays us a commission on stays booked through the site, and that's the whole business model. It works the same way on every stay we can book, and the place guides aren't bookable at all, so it has no bearing on what earns a spot here.
How often do you revisit what's already published?
Continuously, rather than on a schedule. The editorial index date on this page tracks the most recent change across the site, and every page carries its own updated date.
